After 10+ years as a business owner, I had a gut-check moment: If I walked away today, would my business still be valuable without me? (Or would it collapse like a house of cards?) For better or worse, it was the latter.
That’s when I discovered John Warrillow’s book, Built to Sell, and the Value Builder System.
Upon completing a simple, 40-question Value Builder Score survey, I realized we were in great shape in a few areas, but were dealing with significant risk in others. Too much of our new business depended on my ability to sell and deliver, too much current revenue depended on one large account, and there were too few hands to complete key projects for the future.
A year later, that risk has been significantly mitigated. We’ve built an amazing team to manage the financial, marketing and product development functions. The bottom line? Our business is more valuable than it was a year ago and I’m not so much of a risk to it.
